National Coast Guard Day



August 7th is National Coast Guard Day.

Two hundred and twenty years ago on this date, the US Congress created the Revenue Cutter Service by authorizing the construction of ten Cutter Type boats with the purpose of enforcing tariff laws.

This organization eventually evolved into what we know today as the US Coast Guard.

  • The US Coast Guard is one of five branches of the US Armed Forces, and falls under the jurisdiction of the US Department of Homeland Security.
  • The US Coast Guard motto "Semper Paratus" is Latin for "Always Ready."
